Upright biennial often used for poor soils.
Outstanding bee plant.
Drought resistant and winter hardy through zone 4.
Takes a wide range of soils and climates, and will pierce through subsoil. pH 6.5 or higher. Fixes to 125 lbs of nitrogen an acre. Grazing animals love it. Grows very tall-to fix feet.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Need adequate calcium and phosphorous to perform well. Likes neutral to alkaline loams, but pretty tolerant of heavy, poorly-drained soils. If broadcasting, overseed by a third, and cover seed 2-3 times its width with soil and firm down. Protect from birds if needed, and water to establish, especially with severe frosts. Requires 17" of rainfall per year.
